IT Development and Operations tools Technician - DevOps (TTE Programme)

IT Development and Operations tools Technician - DevOps (TTE Programme)

Geneva, Switzerland

Full-time

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization.

Job Description

  • Are you a technician looking for a challenging professional experience to further your career?  If so, joining CERN’s TTE programme may very well give you that challenge.  This position as a IT technician is part of our prestigious TTE programme.
  • The Infrastructure section in the Control group of the Beam Department (BE-CO-IN) is in charge, of the specification, procurement, administration and support of the CERN Accelerator computing infrastructure. Among others, it provides support for the procurement, licensing, installation and configuration of the CO Enterprise integrated development tools. Relying specifically on ATLASSIAN toolchain, BE-CO-IN aims at unifying its developments, automating and monitoring all steps of the software construction (integration, testing and deployment) as well as documentation creation and sharing and for issues tracking.

Functions

This job shall cover essentially the support and maintenance of our DevOps toolchain (JIRA, Confluence, etc.), licensing, installation, configuration and seamless integration with the IT centralized services (E-mail, GIT, Database, etc.). This activity covers also developments (Web portal, scripts, etc.) to customize our tools and workflows and finally, the user support: creation of new spaces in WIKI and JIRA, access permission, bug fixes and maintenance of dedicated interfaces with the IT Help Desk Ticketing solution.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a place on the programme you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State (https://home.cern/about/member-states);
  • You have a Technical Diploma in IT or system administration (careers.cern/ttediplomas), and no more than 4 years' relevant experience after finishing your diploma;
  • If you are currently studying, you are still eligible to apply, although you are expected to have obtained your qualification by the start of your appointment at CERN;
  • If you hold a BSc or MSc, you are not eligible. However you may be eligible for the Fellowship Programme.
  • You should have at least a working knowledge of English or French.

Additional Information

CERN would very much like to benefit from your expertise, commitment and passion.  In return, CERN will provide you with:

  • An employment contract of one year, renewable for a second year;
  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French;
  • A take home pay of approximately 3,546 CHF per month (net of tax);
  • Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund;
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva;
  • 2,5 days of paid leave per month.

Qualification/skills required

  • JIRA, Confluence, Crowd, Bamboo, Fisheye, Crucible, Portfolio
  • GIT, CI/CD
  • MySQL, related database maintenance
  • Linux OS
  • An exhaustive knowledge of the tools is not required but the candidate must be able to acquire enough skills on most of them (and potentially others) – with training possibly dispensed by the CERN means - that will allow providing the requested service. Basics of Python, SQL, Openstack and Openshift platforms would be an advantage.

This is how you can apply. Here are few tips to start you off:

The top one is: don't rush it!

Ensure your CV is complete with all skills and experience that make you stand out as a candidate.

Also include in this section all the specific skills (e.g. programming languages, hardware, databases etc.) that you have acquired that will support your application.

If you apply to more than one job, you will need to upload the documents for each application you submit.

And last but not least, make good use of the ‘Motivation’ section to tell us why you’re a great candidate for CERN!

The process also comprises a number of questions, which we recommend you answer with due care. We notably encourage you to pay particular attention to the motivation and education/experience field.
