PhD position (m/f/d) on stimuli-responsive and adaptive building blocks for additive manufacturing
The successful candidate will join a cutting-edge research project funded by the prestigious ERC grant scheme. The project pursues the idea that polymer material innovations arise from the way materials are made. The ERC project 3DPartForm will address the current lack of additive manufacturing providing multifunctional, stimuli-responsive materials, in which not only strongly different, but most importantly functional building blocks with intrinsic time axis will be processed into true 4D-polymer multimaterials. The PhD position is devoted to synthesize functional and stimuli-sensitive macromers and monomers, and process these – in close collaboration with other project members – into microscopic building blocks for additive manufacturing. It will be of particular interest that these building blocks can be later assembled into larger hierarchical structures that are not simply static, but able to guide, process and manipulate information based on light, electric charges or diffusing molecules.
To tackle these challenges, the successful candidate is trained in macromolecular chemistry and polymer synthesis, microfluidics is a plus.
The desire to path new ways in how polymer materials are made, to work across disciplines and discuss results with collaborators from other fields is essential.
Starting date: 01.04.2020 contract for 1 year with the possibility of extension for further 2 years
